Hematite (kidney ore) - Florence Mine, Egremont, west Cumberland Iron Field, Cumbria, UK.

This variety of hematite, known as Kidney Ore, was found at Florence Mine east of the west Cumbrian town of Egremont. Iron mineralization here occurs by the displacement of limestone.

It is a magnificent specimen in heart shape, striking for its size, color, morphology and patina. In cross-section, the hematite is graphite to steel gray with a silky luster, while the outer surface has a reddish metallic luster. The hematite forms a heart-like shape, "LONELY HEART." This excellent piece is a great historic collectible specimen labeled from the 1980s.
